Echigo City is a municipality in Niigata Prefecture. It became an ordinance-designated city in 2007 through an absorption-type merger, and its population exceeded 1 million in 2016. As of October 2020, the population was approximately 1.13 million, making it the largest city on the Japan Sea coast of Honshu. Urban development includes the development of Echigo Port in the newly re-created development areas of Bandai and Furumachi in Niigata City.
